Feature of Disease of the Oral Mucosa PDF free download:

Admittedly, the horizon of the oral cavity appears rather limited when regarding its spatial dimension compared to what Jack Sparrow—pardon, Captain Jack Sparrow, had before his eyes. Similar as the notorious pirate, the reader of this book can expect, when continuing the voyage, a widened horizon and this in at least two angles. First, authors from different specialties, such as dermatology, oral medicine, rheumatology, oral surgery, dentistry, pathology, surgery, pediatrics, pediatric dentistry, allergology, molecular medicine, nutrition medicine, experimental dermatology, military medicine, radiology, and anatomy, as well as from different geographical regions including Bahrain, Chile, China, Finland, Hungary, India, Israel, Iran, Italy, Japan, Germany, Netherlands, Singapore, Turkey, Switzerland, UK, Uganda, and USA, have come together for this book. These different medical and geographical backgrounds are the base for a broad view on various aspects of a wide range of diseases manifesting at the oral mucosa. The second angle of the literally widened horizon is the constant effort of the book to draw our attention, whenever applicable, to extra-oral manifestations of the respective diseases. Nearly all disorders that initially or predominantly present with oral lesions may also manifest outside the oral cavity as prototypically seen in lichen planus, Behçet disease, and pemphigus vulgaris. In some disorders, extra-oral presentations give valuable clues to the diagnosis such as involvement of nails and scalp, sites that are easily acessible to every physician. In many others, e.g. in Crohn’s disease, Cowden syndrome, mucous membrane pemphigoid, syphilis, gingival hyperplasia, malignant melanoma, and Kaposi sarcoma, the presented oral pathology may be the starting point for a thorough examination of the patient. In some of our patients, the oral lesion may fnally prove only to be the tip of an iceberg with relevant systemic disease or major pathologies at other sites.
