There are many books about linear regression (for mean differences), logistic regression (odds ratios), and the Cox proportional hazards model (hazard ratios). There are several fine books about count models, which are often used for the analysis of incidence rates (counts of new events divided by person-time). In 1987, Breslow and Day published Statistical Methods in Cancer Research, Volume II: The Design and Analysis of Cohort Studies, an excellent discussion of rate standardization, Poisson regression, and other methods for incidence rates (Breslow and Day 1987). Their book was cutting-edge when published and it is still in print and worth reading. In the last three decades there have been advances in computing power, software, and methods. My goal was to pull some of that material together in one place. I hoped to create a book that clarifies what incidence rates are, reviews their advantages and limitations, promotes understanding of analytic methods, provides practical suggestions for analyses, and points out problems and pitfalls.
I was a physician for 20 years and then became an epidemiologist. Therefore, some jargon and most examples in this book come from the biomedical field. The book is perhaps most suitable for the field of biostatistics. But the methods described should be useful for the disciplines of sociology, criminology, psychology, economics, and education. The book is aimed at researchers in any discipline who would like to analyze incidence rates. The orientation is toward practical issues of analysis regarding rate ratios and differences. Special attention was given to problems that recur in published papers. I tried to keep mathematical notation and statistical terminology to a minimum. The language and notation is not as statistically sophisticated as that in the book by Breslow and Day (Breslow and Day 1987). This has advantages and disadvantages. For those not used to some of this terminology, my hope was to make the discussion more accessible, but some may miss conventional notation and wording to which they are accustomed.
