The second version of my book, Adaptive Design Theory and Implementation Using SAS and R, was just expanded from 350 pages to nearly 700 pages; however, it still cannot catch up with the development of research of adaptive clinical trials. On the other hand, with the popular increase of adaptive trials, there has been an increase in demand for a tutorial book, which can help newcomers quickly get a feel of adaptive designs and grasp the foundations of adaptive design methods without having to commit a huge amount of time and effort. This Introductory Adaptive Trial Designs with R was written for this purpose. We made this a tutorial style book, reducing the mathematics to a minimum, and making it as practical as possible. Instead of providing the black-box-like general commercial software packages, I have developed the R functions and included them in the book for readers to better understand the algorithms and to be able to customize the adaptive designs to meet their needs. By learning through doing, the reader doesn’t need to buy any software package, but instead can download the popular freeware R and do adaptive design immediately. For those who do not have any experience with R, we have provided a 30 minute tutorial in Appendix A. To learn adaptive designs effectively, the reader should run the simulations for all the examples provided in the book and change the input parameters to see how each input parameter will affect the simulation outcomes or design operating characteristics.
