Occupational epidemiology is the systematic study of illnesses and injuries that are related to the workplace environment. Since roughly the middle of the twentieth century, occupational epidemiology has emerged as a distinctive subdiscipline within )he broad field of epidemiology. The ímpetus for this development has been an increasing awareness by epidemiologists of the requirement for rigorous research methods to investigate the frequency and causes of work-related díseases and injuries. Historically, observations by workers, management, and physicians of the occurrence of health impairments in certain occupational groups, such as debilitating lung diseases among underground miners, have motivated efforts to estímate the magnitude of problems and to identify causal factors. Such efforts continue to be important and necessary worldwide. Increasingly, occupational epidemiologists are addressing fundamental public health and scientific research questions about hazard identification, estimation of dose-response relations, and assessment of the adequacy of occupational exposure _guidelines. These activities are ultimately pivotal for setting occupational health policy. Moreover, findings from research in occupational epidemiology are often extrapolated to estimate exposure and risk relations in community settings. Fortunately, methodological advances in epidemiology and in the related sciences of occupational hygiene, toxicology, and biostatistis facilitare research into these complex issues.
