Features of Research Methods in Occupational Epidemiology (1989) PDF free download:

Occupational epidemiology has emerged as a distinct subdiscipline within the general fields of epidemiology and occupational medicine during the past several decades. The impetus for this development has been an increasing awareness by practitioners of occupational epidemiology of the need to apply rigorous research methods to the study of the frequency and causes of work-related diseases and injuries. Moreover, the emergence of occupational epidemiology has been accompanied by a broadened scope of injury. Observations by workers and physicians of the occurrence of illness characteristic to certain occupational groups, such as debilitating lung diseases among underground miners, historically have motivated efforts by epidemiologists to estimate the extent of the problem and to identify causative factors. Such efforts continue to be important and necessary. Increasingly, occupational epidemiologists are addressing fundamental public health and scientific questions relating to the specification of exposure—response relationships, assessment of the adequacy of occupational exposure guidelines and extrapolation of hazardous effects to other occupational and nonoccupational settings. Fortunately, methodological advances in epidemiology and in the related sciences of toxicology, industrial hygiene, health physics, and biostatistics can facilitate research into these complex issues.
