This book is a compendium of the significant pathological stress factors that are capable of inducing tree injury and disease; it is not a comprehensive account of the diseases of forest trees.
For numerous reasons the pathological consideration of forest trees is quite distinct from that of agricultural plants. The comparatively large size and long life span of trees coupled with their relatively low value have been of primary significance in the development of these differences. The high value of certain agricultural crops has led to a rather intensive consideration of their pathology. The significance of nematodes, viruses, bacteria, and fungi as disease-inducing agents has been well documented for several plants. In the case of forest trees, however, disease research has been less intensive, and, until recently, primary emphasis was placed on studies of fungal disease agents. Fungi are still considered the principal biotic agents of tree disease. Evidence is being accumulated, however, that indicates that nematodes, viruses, and bacteria are also significant biotic stress factors of trees. In addition, greater attention is being given to the significance of numerous abiotic stress factors.
