This is the second Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) proceedings, this one focusing on the DFU Challenge 2022 (DFUC 2022), organized in conjunction with the 25th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2022). Following two challenges (DFUC 2020 and DFUC 2021) conducted as virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this challenge event was conducted in person on September 22, 2022 in Singapore. We received over 1000 submissions for the validation stage and 52 submissions for the testing stage.
The DFU challenges aim to motivate the healthcare domain to share datasets, participate in ground truth annotation, and enable data-innovation in computer algorithm development. In the longer term, it will lead to improved patient care and reduce the strain on overburdened healthcare systems. With joint efforts from leading scientists from the UK, US, India and New Zealand, these inaugural challenges were well-received, with the first DFU challenge successfully conducted in 2020 for the task of DFU detection and the second DFU challenge successfully conducted in 2021 for the task of DFU classification. The task of DFUC 2022 was ulcer segmentation, for the purpose of supporting research towards more advanced methods of ulcer region quantification.
